Mrigashira
a Moon, Ascendant or other key point in Mrigashira, the fifth lunar mansion
What the tradition reads
Mrigashira is the fifth of the twenty seven lunar mansions, running from the closing portion of Taurus into the opening of Gemini in the sidereal zodiac. Its ruling planet is Mars, its symbol a deer's head, and its presiding deity is Soma, another name for Chandra, the Moon. Called the searching star, a Moon, Ascendant or other significant point placed here is read as giving a restless, questing intelligence, a native drawn to knowledge, truthfulness and good administration and generally well liked and obedient toward teachers. The tradition reads Mrigashira's gifts as real, good looks, enthusiasm, and the capacity to accumulate both learning and wealth, but names restlessness and a shortage of patience as the mansion's characteristic fault, a tendency to decide too quickly and to regret a decision made before it was properly weighed. Modern jyotish adds a caution about being too easily drawn in by others, a searching disposition that can wander toward infidelity as readily as toward learning if nothing else in the chart steadies it. The deer's head that names the mansion gives its whole character a single image, alert, quick, and never quite still in one place for long.
The story
Soma is simply another name under which the tradition addresses Chandra, the Moon, whose single defining trait is a search that never ends, waxing toward fullness only to wane back down again every month without rest. That search was fixed on him by Daksha's curse, brought on when Chandra could not stop favouring Rohini above his twenty seven other wives despite every warning to share his attention evenly, and the endless cycle of increase and decrease that followed was itself only a softened version of a punishment meant to consume him outright. A mansion named for a searching, ever moving creature and ruled by a deity whose whole visible nature is restless searching, never settling at either extreme for more than a moment, gives Mrigashira its clearest inheritance: quickness of mind and curiosity that serve it well, paired with an inability to simply stop looking once whatever it wanted has already been found.
