Hasta
a Moon, Ascendant or other key point in Hasta, the thirteenth lunar mansion
What the tradition reads
Hasta is the thirteenth of the twenty seven lunar mansions, occupying the middle portion of Virgo in the sidereal zodiac. Its ruling planet is the Moon, its symbol a hand or a closed fist, and its presiding deity is Savitr, the solar power that impels. A Moon, Ascendant or other significant point placed here is read as giving sincerity, loyalty and a genuine kindness, alongside a charming vivacity and a generosity that others notice quickly, often paired with a tall, well built and physically striking presence that projects strength and calm together. The tradition credits Hasta natives with a sharp intellect, real self control and a faithfulness once given, together with an ability to inspire and to lead others through wisdom and demonstrated skill rather than through coercion, said to be uncharacteristic of the mansion's better nature. Where the placement turns difficult, the same drive toward mastery is read as an outright dominating cruelty, a callous disregard for others' feelings, and a willingness to scheme against whoever is judged to deserve punishment. The hand that names Hasta ties the mansion to skilled work of every kind, a maker's gift meant to shape and to steady rather than merely to grasp.
The story
Savitr is the name given, in Vedic tradition, to the sun's power before it has fully risen, distinguished at times from Surya, the sun once risen, and read at other times as simply another name for the same body, the two terms used interchangeably in several hymns. Where he is kept distinct, Savitr stands for the sun's vivifying influence rather than its visible disc, described with golden arms, broad and beautiful hands, golden eyes, yellow hair and a golden chariot with a golden axle, an image built entirely from light given a craftsman's precision rather than left as simple brightness. It is Savitr, not Surya, whom the Gayatri mantra addresses, one of the most repeated verses in the whole of Vedic recitation, invoked to inspire right thought and right action in whoever calls on him. A mansion named for the hand, ruled by the one solar name the tradition consistently describes in terms of hands and craft rather than simple heat, reads its own gift accordingly: power that has already been given shape and direction before it ever does its work.
