Bharani

a Moon, Ascendant or other key point in Bharani, the second lunar mansion

What the tradition reads

Bharani is the second of the twenty seven lunar mansions, occupying the middle portion of Aries in the sidereal zodiac. Its ruling planet is Venus, its symbol the yoni, and its presiding deity is Yama, lord of the dead. A Moon, Ascendant or other significant point placed here is read through a mix of innocence and instinct, a native inclined to explore and experiment rather than sit back and calculate the odds first. The tradition gives Bharani a strong current of feeling, an overwhelming vulnerability to emotion and desire paired with an inability to tolerate being dominated by anyone, and reads its natives as outwardly calm even where the inner mood runs volatile. Sincerity and a sense of duty stand alongside a taste for indulgence, the same appetite that can tip toward extravagance if left unchecked. Because Bharani sits between the swift action of Ashwini and the fire of Krittika, its own themes read as more elemental still, desire, experimentation, jealousy, sacrifice and fear named directly in modern readings as the mansion's essential cycle, one the tradition considers well suited to the performing arts, where those same raw feelings can be given a controlled and public shape.

The story

Yama, born to the sun god Surya and his wife Sanjna, was, in the tradition's telling, the first mortal being to die, and in dying found and marked out the path to the world of the dead, becoming the ruler of that realm as a consequence rather than by any prior design. He judges each soul that reaches him according to its deeds, assigning it to the company of the ancestors, to the suffering of Naraka, or back to rebirth on earth, a role that gives him the title Dharmaraja, lord of the moral order rather than a lord of cruelty. His twin sister Yami once pressed him, in a dialogue preserved in the Rigveda, to join with her and continue their line, and Yama refused her. A mansion ruled by the first being to cross into death, and the one being who declined even his own twin's offer of continuance, inherits a character caught permanently between raw appetite and the discipline that first appetite must eventually answer to.
