Ardra

a Moon, Ascendant or other key point in Ardra, the sixth lunar mansion

What the tradition reads

Ardra is the sixth of the twenty seven lunar mansions, occupying the middle portion of Gemini in the sidereal zodiac and corresponding to the star Betelgeuse. Its ruling planet is Rahu, its symbol a teardrop or a jewel, and its presiding deity is Rudra, the fierce Vedic storm god. Its name means wet, or charged with water, and a Moon, Ascendant or other significant point placed here is read as giving hardworking, dedicated natives who set a goal and drive it through to completion, though not without cost: the tradition describes a life of repeated ups and downs, sudden reversals that must be met and answered rather than avoided. Ardra natives are read as intelligent, innovative and genuinely empathetic toward others, capable seekers of knowledge who succeed professionally through real effort. The same intensity that drives the achievement is read as carrying its own weather, the tradition naming an undercurrent of sadness, an impulsive streak and, at its most difficult, a stubborn or even violent temperament, a mansion whose gifts and whose storms are read as coming from the same source rather than as two separate things.

The story

Rudra, whose name comes from a root meaning to cry out or to howl, appears in the earliest Vedic hymns as a frightening deity of storm and wild places, described as fierce as a wild beast and armed with arrows read as bolts of lightning falling across heaven and earth. The same fearsome god is addressed, in the same hymns, as the best physician among physicians, holder of a thousand medicines, a healer as much as a destroyer, credited with sending sickness and with curing it in the same breath. Later tradition softened his name toward Shiva, the auspicious one, easing a terrifying figure into a more approachable form without ever fully setting the older, wilder character aside. A mansion named for wetness itself, whether tears or storm rain, ruled by a god who is both the wound and the medicine for it, reads Ardra's own turbulence the same way Rudra's worshippers always have, as a force too large to be only destructive, however hard its weather is to live through while it lasts.
