The fixed modality

general summary for a chart with a dominant balance of fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius)

What the tradition reads

Fixed is the second of the tradition's three modalities, belonging to Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, the four signs that follow directly on from the cardinal signs that open each season and carry that season through its middle, settled stretch rather than its beginning or its close. Ptolemy describes the logic plainly: fixed signs are so called "because, during the Sun's presence in them, the cold, heat, moisture or dryness, of the season, which commenced on his arrival in the preceding tropical or equinoctial sign, is then more firmly established," the season's own character no longer arriving but fully in possession of the sky. The tradition reads fixed as the modality of persistence, stability and resolve, the will that holds a position once taken rather than the will that starts something or the will that lets it go, and a chart weighted toward fixed signs is read as loyal, dependable and slow to be moved once its mind is made up, comfortable holding steady long after a more restless temperament would have grown bored. The tradition's caution is stubbornness carried past usefulness, a resistance to change that can harden into rigidity, and a reluctance to release a position, a possession or a grudge even once holding on to it no longer serves any purpose.

The story

Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos sets out a fourfold division of the twelve signs by season, in a chapter titled, in the Ashmand translation, "Tropical, Equinoctial, Fixed, and Bicorporeal Signs." The two signs that open each season are tropical or equinoctial, the sign that follows and settles the season is fixed, and the sign that closes the season and blends into the next is bicorporeal. Ptolemy's own reasoning for the name is that once the Sun leaves the sign where a season began, the character that season already carries is no longer arriving but, as the text puts it, "more firmly established," and Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, each the sign directly after one of the four that open a season, take the name fixed on that basis rather than any other. The four fixed signs sit three signs apart from one another around the wheel, spaced exactly as evenly as the four opening signs are. Later astrology kept this same seasonal geometry while shifting its subject from the sky's literal weather to human temperament, so that a division first meant to describe how firmly a season's cold, heat, moisture or dryness had taken hold came, over time, to describe how firmly a person holds a position once it is taken, the difference between starting a thing, holding it in place, and letting it go.
