The disseminating phase
general summary for a progressed Moon in its disseminating phase
What the tradition reads
The progressed lunation cycle reads the roughly thirty year relationship between the progressed Moon and the progressed Sun, advancing a symbolic day for every year of life, as a slow repetition of the Moon's own visible phases. Rudhyar divided the cycle into eight phases of forty five degrees each, and the disseminating phase, running from two hundred and twenty five to two hundred and seventy degrees of separation, is the sixth of the eight, following the full phase and corresponding to the Moon's disc waning past fullness, still bright but visibly diminishing. The tradition reads a disseminating phase progressed Moon as suited to spreading what has already been learned or realised, demonstrating a wisdom gained during the phases before it and carrying ideas outward, often through some form of social movement or cause rather than solitary insight. Where the full phase received an illumination, the disseminating phase is read as the phase that must give it away, and the tradition names a real risk in doing so too eagerly: a disseminating native can slide from conviction into mental confusion, or press an idea with a fervour that tips into outright fanaticism, mistaking the urgency of the message for a licence to stop examining it.
The story
Rudhyar's The Lunation Cycle set the eight phase scheme out as a life's sequence of psychological tasks rather than a fixed birth type, and read the disseminating phase, sixth of the eight, as the point at which the full phase's illumination is carried outward into the world, distributed rather than simply held. He developed the scheme while studying Carl Jung's psychology, calling his approach humanistic astrology and treating the birth chart as potential unfolding through time rather than a fortune fixed once at birth. The Rudhyar Archival Project's own summary of the eight lunation types keeps this reading close to Rudhyar's own account, describing the disseminating native's ability to demonstrate learned wisdom and to disseminate ideas through social movements, and naming the specific danger the phase carries, mental confusion or fanaticism, as the cost of advocacy pursued without the same care that earned the wisdom being spread.
