The crescent phase

general summary for a progressed Moon in its crescent phase

What the tradition reads

The progressed lunation cycle treats the roughly thirty year relationship between the progressed Moon and the progressed Sun, moving forward a symbolic day for every year of life, as a slow repetition of the Moon's own visible phases. Rudhyar divided the cycle into eight phases of forty five degrees each, and the crescent phase, running from forty five to ninety degrees of separation, is the second of the eight, following the new phase and corresponding to the Moon as a thin, growing sliver low in the evening sky. The tradition reads a crescent phase progressed Moon as "determined self-assertiveness" paired with "active faith," an eagerness to press an intention forward into visible existence even before it has taken any solid shape, and a native disposition to keep pushing at a goal that has only just been set. It is also read as a phase of real friction: the crescent native tends to meet resistance from circumstance or from an unsupportive environment, struggling against odds that the earlier new phase had not yet encountered, and the tradition names frustration as the crescent's characteristic difficulty, born of an impulse that wants form sooner than the world is willing to give it.

The story

Rudhyar's The Lunation Cycle set out the eight phase scheme as a working description of a life's psychological tasks in sequence rather than a fixed birth type, and read the crescent phase, second in the cycle, as the point where the raw impulse of the new phase first tries to become deliberate and self assertive rather than merely instinctive. He developed the scheme while studying Carl Jung's psychology, calling the resulting approach humanistic astrology and treating the birth chart as a structure of potential unfolding through time rather than a fortune fixed at birth. The Rudhyar Archival Project's own summary of the eight lunation types keeps this reading intact, describing the crescent native's determined self assertiveness and active faith in essentially Rudhyar's own terms, and naming the frustration that can come from struggling against odds as the specific difficulty this early, still forming phase of the cycle tends to produce.
