The Naga karana
a birth, or an activity begun, in the Naga karana, one of the four fixed karanas, occurring once each lunar month
What the tradition reads
Naga is one of the four fixed karanas, occurring once in a lunar month rather than repeating through it, and its name is shared directly with the serpent beings of the same name in Hindu myth. Astrogle.com's reading names the karana's deity as Naga, the serpent, and describes its native as a specialist in minerals and metals, of good character and skilled at handling snakes. Astrosight.ai gives a more mixed and cautious reading, calling the karana favourable chiefly for worship connected to serpent deities and otherwise inauspicious for the ordinary business of the world, a caution astrobelief.com echoes when it describes the Naga karana as suited to secrecy, research and deep or hidden knowledge rather than to open dealings. Falling as it does among the fixed karanas clustered near the new moon, Naga is treated across these sources as a span for what is buried, guarded or specialised rather than for anything meant to be conducted in full view.
The story
Wikipedia's article on the Nagas names them children of the sage Kashyapa and his wife Kadru, serpent beings capable of taking human, part serpent or wholly serpent form, dwelling in an underworld realm of hidden treasure, and locked in an eternal rivalry with Garuda, the eagle. Yet the same tradition gives them a nobler turn: it is Vasuki, king of the nagas, who serves as the churning rope wound around Mount Mandara when the gods and demons together churn the ocean of milk for the nectar of immortality, a serpent's body made to serve the world's most consequential act of cooperation. Naga's fixed karana inherits both halves of this character, a hidden power at odds with at least one great rival, capable, when it chooses, of holding up something far greater than itself.
