The Bava karana
a birth, or an activity begun, in the Bava karana, the first of the seven movable karanas, which recurs eight times over a lunar month
What the tradition reads
A karana is half a tithi, the span in which the angular distance between the Sun and Moon grows by six degrees rather than the twelve degrees of a full tithi, and a lunar month holds sixty of them. Eleven names cover all sixty: seven movable karanas cycle through eight times each, and four fixed karanas appear once apiece around the new moon. Bava opens the movable sequence, falling in the second half of every Shukla paksha Pratipada and recurring seven more times before the cycle closes. Onesanatan.com names Indra as Bava's presiding deity and reads the karana's character as strength, courage and nobility, while astrosight.ai instead reads it as auspicious for new beginnings, learning and the forming of a friendship. Astrobelief.com's tradition of assigning a symbolic animal to each karana gives Bava the lion, and reads a native marked by it as working tirelessly and with sincerity, comfortable enough materially to be content rather than grasping, and drawn toward matters of faith. Because it stands first among the movable karanas, the tradition sets it apart from Vishti, the seventh and only inauspicious one in the same cycle, treating Bava instead as one of the ordinary, usable spans of the month, fit for study, friendship and a sincere new start rather than for anything requiring stealth or delay.
The story
Onesanatan.com names Indra, king of the devas and Vedic god of storm and thunder, as Bava's presiding deity. Indra's own most celebrated deed, as Wikipedia's article records, is the killing of Vritra, the great serpent whose coils had blocked the world's rivers and withheld its rains, an act that restores both rain and sunshine to a world that had gone without them. Astrosight.ai's separate reading of the same karana keeps to plainer ground, naming new beginnings, learning and friendship as the activities it favours rather than describing a deity or a native's character at all. Bava's place first among the seven movable karanas, opening the cycle that will, seven karanas later, close on Vishti, the one karana the same tradition marks as fit for nothing peaceable at all, fits a deity remembered above all for opening what had been closed: a steady first move rather than the cycle's last, harsher one.
