The eighth house

what the eighth house governs in the Western chart

What the tradition reads

The eighth house, the tradition holds, governs death, and by extension everything a person receives rather than earns directly: inheritance, a partner's resources, debt, and what is shared rather than individually owned, which the tradition reads as belonging together because all of them involve a transfer of what belonged to someone else. Ptolemy's own chapter on the kind of death never names the eighth house: it reads the anaeretic places, the destructive points derived from his separate doctrine on the length of life, and whichever planet governs them, for the manner and circumstance of a native's own end, a judgment the ancient world sought with a directness that later centuries found increasingly uncomfortable to make explicit. Lilly's tradition keeps death as the eighth house's first office and adds the partner's money, the seventh house's spouse read one house further round for what that spouse brings into the union financially, on the same logic that gives the second house one's own money and the eighth the money that arrives through another. Alan Leo, who heads his own chapter on the house death, and the dream consciousness, gives it the goods of the dead, legacies, executorships and occupations connected with death, and some forms of mediumship and occultism, and reads it besides for regeneration or rebirth, the raising of any faculty signified to what he calls a higher octave, which is how a house of endings came to carry a language of renewal.

The story

The eighth house is a succedent house, sharing that middle rank with the second, fifth and eleventh rather than falling into the weaker, cadent tier with the third, sixth, ninth and twelfth, so its grim reputation rests on its subject rather than on any special weakness of its geometry; Alan Leo, who draws those three ranks up, reads the succedent houses as more in sympathy with the feelings and emotions than the angles are, and as more closely related to the inner strength of the character. He also sets the eighth in a triangle with the fourth and the twelfth, the watery, psychic or astral subdivision of the zodiac, which is the company its reputation keeps. Ptolemy's own chapter on the manner of death treated the topic as a legitimate and central question for astrology to answer, not a morbid curiosity, since a culture that read a chart for a life's whole shape considered its ending part of that shape rather than an exception to it. The house's second meaning, a partner's money and shared resources, entered the tradition by a plainer logic, counted as the seventh house's money, one turn further round the wheel from the spouse the seventh house itself represents, and by Lilly's time the two meanings, mortality and shared wealth, sat comfortably in the same chapter without the tradition finding any contradiction between them.
