What the tradition reads
In the Vedic marriage matching system, the yoni is the animal, and its sex, that the tradition assigns to each of the twenty seven nakshatras, so that Ashwini is given the horse, Bharani the elephant, and so on through the full cycle, with several nakshatras sharing the same animal in either its male or its female form. The yoni kuta, one of the eight tests of the Ashtakoota matching system, compares the yoni animals of the prospective bride and groom's Moon nakshatras and scores their pairing out of four points, reading a shared animal as the closest possible match, a pairing of male and female of the same animal as good, unrelated animals as neutral, and animals the tradition names as natural enemies, such as the cat and the rat, as the weakest result the test can return. The tradition reads the yoni kuta specifically as a measure of physical and sexual compatibility between the couple, distinct from the other seven kutas, which examine temperament, health, planetary friendship and the couple's wider fortune, and different published tables of enemy pairs do not always agree with one another, so that a small number of animal pairings receive different scores depending on which table an astrologer follows.
The story
Yoni is an old Sanskrit word whose root sense is a place of origin, an abode or a source, from which its more specific anatomical meaning, the womb or the female organs of generation, and its ritual meaning as a symbol of divine procreative energy, paired with the lingam, both extend; the word already appears with this range of meaning in the Rigveda, among the oldest surviving Sanskrit texts. Scholars trace the word to a Proto-Indo-Iranian root meaning an abode, comparable to an Avestan cognate, though some alternative proposals connect it to Greek terms instead, and the word's deepest origin is treated as genuinely unsettled rather than fully resolved. The animal and sex assigned to each nakshatra under this name is a considerably later, specifically astrological layer built on top of the older, more general word, using yoni in its sense of an originating type or a natural kind, the animal a person's Moon nakshatra places them within, rather than in its older anatomical or ritual senses directly.
