What the tradition reads
A stellium is a cluster of at least three planets linked together by a series of continuous conjunctions, near enough to one another in longitude that the whole group is read as acting together rather than as three or more separate placements. Because the planets involved need not all be in exact aspect to every other member of the cluster, only chained closely enough that each is in range of its neighbour, the tradition treats a stellium as giving a huge emphasis to whichever sign, or house, holds it, regardless of what the person's Sun sign alone would otherwise suggest, and a stellium falling across a house cusp is generally read as weighting both houses at once rather than settling cleanly into one. Wherever it falls in a chart, a stellium is read as a concentration strong enough to dominate a chart's overall tone, the sign and house it occupies becoming a kind of gravitational centre the rest of the chart is read in relation to.
The story
The dictionaries record stellium as a synonym of the older astrological term satellitium, and the relationship between the two words gives away the technique's real history: satellitium is built from the Latin satelles, an attendant, a guard or a bodyguard, with the noun suffix ium, naming quite literally an escort or a retinue, the picture of several lesser bodies clustered attentively around one another exactly as a bodyguard clusters around whoever it protects. Stellium, by contrast, looks as though it should derive from the Latin stella, a star, an entirely plausible but etymologically separate word, and the dictionaries do not record it as a distinct coinage with its own history so much as a variant that has, by long popular use, entirely displaced its older and more precisely rooted sibling in everyday astrological speech. The result is a term whose everyday meaning, several bodies gathered close together, survives intact from the original Latin image of an escort, even though the word most astrologers now use to name it quietly points, on its surface at least, toward the stars themselves rather than toward any guard or retinue.
