What the tradition reads
The navamsa, also called the D9 chart, is a divisional chart built by dividing every sign of the birth chart into nine equal parts of three degrees twenty minutes each, one of sixteen such divisional charts, called vargas, that Vedic astrology derives from the single rashi chart to examine different areas of life in finer detail. The tradition reads the navamsa chiefly for marriage, the spouse, and dharma, a person's right conduct and life purpose, and the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra names the navamsa as one of six vargas, alongside the rashi, hora, decanate, dvadasamsa and trimsamsa charts, combined to compute a planet's Vimsopaka strength, a points based measure of dignity that the text says decides how far a planet can deliver the auspicious effects of its dasha period. The navamsa sign occupied by a chart's atmakaraka, called the karakamsa, is treated as a further, especially significant point, given its own dedicated chapter in the classical text, read for the deepest direction of a life in a way the ordinary rashi chart does not directly address.
The story
Wiktionary's Sanskrit entry for varga glosses the word as a division, class or set, a group of things or people considered together, and its entry for amsa, inherited from the Proto-Indo-Iranian word for a share, glosses it plainly as a share, portion or part; navamsa combines nava, nine, with amsa to name simply the ninth portion, the division of each thirty degree sign into nine parts of three and a third degrees. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra sets the navamsa among sixteen such divisions in its chapter on the sixteen divisions of a sign, and elsewhere gives the karakamsa, the navamsa sign held by the atmakaraka, its own dedicated treatment, a sign of how much independent weight the classical text already gave this particular division over the other fifteen. The broader varga system as a whole rests on the idea that the rashi chart alone is too coarse an instrument to examine every department of a life with equal precision, and that resampling the same birth moment through successive finer divisions, of which the navamsa is the most widely consulted, lets the astrologer weigh a planet's dignity across several charts at once rather than by the rashi chart alone.
