Chara karaka

What the tradition reads

A chara karaka, a "movable significator", is a planet made the signifier of a particular life affair not by which sign or house it occupies but purely by its degree within its own sign relative to every other planet in the chart, a method distinct from and additional to the fixed significations every planet already carries. In the seven planet scheme the seven classical bodies, excluding the two lunar nodes, are ranked from the highest degree to the lowest: the highest becomes the atmakaraka, the significator of the self and the soul's own purpose, and the lowest becomes the darakaraka, the significator of the spouse and of partnership, with the amatyakaraka, bhratrukaraka, matrukaraka, putrakaraka and gnatikaraka filling the ranks between for the mind and close associates, siblings, mother, children and wider kin in turn. An eight planet scheme also exists that includes Rahu, counted from the far end of its sign rather than its own degree, which can shift who holds the atmakaraka or darakaraka title. The tradition treats the atmakaraka in particular as one of the most important single points in the whole chart, its sign and its nakshatra read closely, and its navamsa placement, called the karakamsa, which Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra defines plainly as the navamsa sign occupied by the atmakaraka and gives its own chapter to, reading the planets connected to it for the deeper shape of a life.

The story

The chara karaka scheme belongs to Jaimini astrology, a technique tradition distinct from the more familiar Parashari system and attributed to the sage Jaimini, set out in the Upadesa Sutras rather than in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, though Parashara's own text also names and defines an atmakaraka in its own chapter on planetary karakatwas. The two schemes differ in kind rather than degree: Parashara's karakas are fixed, so the Sun always signifies the father and the Moon always the mother regardless of the individual chart, while Jaimini's chara karakas are recalculated fresh for every nativity from nothing but the raw degree each planet has reached within its sign at the moment of birth, so the same planet can be one person's atmakaraka and another's darakaraka entirely. Wikipedia's page glosses karaka simply as significator and atma as soul, so atmakaraka names quite literally the significator of the soul, the chart's own account of what the soul in this life has most come to do.
