The fire element

general summary for a chart with a dominant balance of the fire element (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)

What the tradition reads

Western astrology sorts the twelve signs into four elements, fire, earth, air and water, a scheme Wikipedia's page on the astrological sign traces to Empedocles's four classical elements, and reads a chart's balance among them as the texture a personality is made of before any single placement is considered. Fire belongs to Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, and Alan Leo's Astrology for All reads each in terms that agree with one another: Aries as always inclined to act on impulse without waiting to mature its plans, keen, outspoken and impulsively generous; Leo as forceful and highly magnetic, carrying an abundance of vitality that benefits everyone near it; and Sagittarius as always looking forward with a bright and happy disposition, enterprising, progressive and full of hope for the future. Read together, a chart weighted toward fire is taken as a temperament that leads with confidence and enthusiasm, that finds its own energy contagious to be around, and that would rather attempt something and fail visibly than deliberate quietly and risk nothing. Where earth wants a plan and water wants a feeling first, fire wants to move, and the tradition treats a shortage of the other elements in a fire heavy chart as a caution rather than a flaw: without earth to give the will a form, or water to let it rest, the same heat that lights a room can burn through people and projects faster than either can be replaced. The count is taken by planet, sign by sign, not from any single placement alone.

The story

The four element scheme predates astrology itself: it comes from the natural philosophy of the pre Socratics, refined by Empedocles into the four elements of fire, air, water and earth. Wikipedia's page on the classical elements records that Aristotle, in his On Generation and Corruption, related each element to two of four sensible qualities, naming fire as both hot and dry, the same pairing the astrological tradition kept attached to the fire signs after the physics itself was abandoned. Astrologers folded the elements directly into the zodiac, assigning three signs to each in an evenly spaced triangle around the wheel, so that fire's three signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, sit four signs apart from one another and were read, from very early on, as a natural alliance, a trine, sympathetic to each other the way three points of the same substance are sympathetic. Wikipedia's page on the astrological sign also gives fire the keywords assertion, drive and willpower, and reports the four elements as a direct equivalent to Hippocrates's personality types, fire matched to the choleric one. The scheme survived the collapse of the old physics as literal science by becoming, instead, a durable vocabulary for temperament, one modern astrology still uses without needing the old physics to be true.
