The air element

general summary for a chart with a dominant balance of the air element (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)

What the tradition reads

Air is the third of the four elements the tradition sorts the zodiac by, belonging to Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, and the tradition reads it through three keywords above all, communication, socialisation and conceptualisation, an element that lives in the space between people and in the mind's own handling of an idea rather than in the body or in a feeling held privately. Air signs share the wheel's positive polarity with fire, read as active, expressive and outward turned, in contrast to the receptive, more inward turned polarity earth and water share; a chart weighted toward air is read as sociable and curious, more at ease putting an experience into words or into conversation with someone else than sitting with it unspoken. In the older scheme of the four humours, air corresponds to the sanguine temperament, the quick, sociable, communicative disposition ancient medicine set against the earth's melancholic slowness. Ptolemy's own account of the triplicity keeps this masculine, active character, assigning Gemini, Libra and Aquarius joint rule to Saturn by day and Mercury by night, and reading the group as principally eastern in its worldly bearing. The tradition's caution about an air heavy chart is a fluency with ideas and talk that can outrun follow through, a mind that conceptualises readily but needs earth's patience or water's feeling to give what it conceives any lasting weight.

The story

The four element scheme predates astrology itself, descending from the natural philosophy of the pre Socratics and refined by Empedocles into the four roots of fire, air, water and earth in the fifth century BCE, later systematised by Aristotle into elemental qualities combined two at a time. Astrologers assigned three signs to each element in an evenly spaced triangle around the wheel, so that air's three signs, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, sit four signs apart and were read as a natural trine, sympathetic to one another. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos keeps the same masculine gendering the wheel gives every other odd numbered sign, reading air, alongside fire, as the active, yang polarity against earth and water's receptive, yin one, and assigns the air triplicity's rule jointly to Saturn and Mercury, with a directional bearing toward the east and, through Jupiter's mixed influence, the north east. The physical theory beneath the scheme, hot and moist breath given form, did not survive the modern understanding of matter, but the personality vocabulary built on it, air as talk, sociability and the life of ideas, endured well past the physics that first proposed it.
