Detriment
a planet standing in the sign opposite the one it rules
What the tradition reads
Detriment is read as the reverse of domicile: a planet standing not in the sign it rules but in the sign directly opposite it, the seat given over to the sign's own ruler's rival rather than to a stranger. Because the domicile scheme runs Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn out symmetrically from Cancer and Leo, each planet's detriment falls exactly opposite its own two home signs, and the Moon and Sun, ruling one sign each, take their single detriment opposite Cancer and Leo in turn: the Moon's detriment is Capricorn, the sign of discipline and restraint set against the sign of feeling and nurture. Lilly's Christian Astrology scores detriment as an explicit negative dignity point, minus five, the mirror of domicile's plus five, with fall scored minus four against exaltation's plus four, and the tradition generally reads a planet so placed as working against its own grain: its natural business has to be carried out in a climate that keeps contradicting it, so what should come easily requires visible effort, or is expressed in a strained or overcompensating form. The astrologers are careful to distinguish detriment from a planet simply badly aspected: a planet in detriment can still function, sometimes forcefully, but the tradition says it does so by fighting its own placement rather than by drawing on it, a Moon there needing to learn feeling as a discipline rather than receiving it as a given.
The story
The doctrine of detriment follows directly from the older doctrine of domicile, and the two are really one idea seen from opposite sides of the wheel: wherever the ancients placed a planet's home, its opposite sign became its discomfort. Ptolemy's own reasoning for the domicile scheme supplies the logic without any separate doctrine of detriment being needed: he assigns Saturn the two signs directly opposite Cancer and Leo because Saturn is cold and furthest from the luminaries, and he says plainly that the configuration by opposition does not co-operate toward the production of good, the same opposition by which every planet's detriment falls opposite its own domicile. Detriment therefore has no history independent of domicile's own: it is domicile's symmetry read from the far side of the circle, not a separately derived doctrine with an origin story of its own. What the tradition preserved was a working intuition dressed in geometry: a household is at its most awkward not in a stranger's home but in the home of the sign least suited to it by Ptolemy's own reasoning of opposition, and the wheel of the zodiac, laid out in a circle of opposite pairs, gave that intuition its exact and lasting shape.
