The Venus dasha
the twenty year Venus mahadasha in the Vimshottari sequence, the longest of the nine
What the tradition reads
In the Vimshottari system, Venus governs a period of twenty years, the longest of the nine, ahead of Saturn's nineteen, Rahu's eighteen and Mercury's seventeen. Phaladeepika reads a Venus dasha as a season of comfort and enjoyment, bringing the materials and facilities for pleasure and leisure, good vehicles, cattle, gems and ornaments, accumulated wealth, intellectual pursuits, voyages and favour from those in power. The tradition treats Venus as the significator of pleasure, beauty, relationships and material refinement, so a period it governs is read as one in which a life's comforts, partnerships and outward polish are built up steadily over a long span rather than won in any single stroke. Because twenty years is the longest any single dasha in the cycle can run, the tradition treats it as capable of shaping the entire visible character of an adult life more thoroughly than any other period, for good where Venus stands well and is well disposed at birth, and toward indulgence, excess or entanglement where it does not, the same length of time simply allowing whichever tendency is present to compound for far longer than a shorter dasha would.
The story
Shukra, son of the sage Bhrigu, became the guru and priest of the asuras, the rivals of the gods, and is remembered above all for his mastery of Sanjivani Vidya, the secret science of restoring the dead to life, a power he is said to have earned from Shiva after performing austerities and to have used repeatedly to revive asuras slain in battle against the devas. The same tradition also tells that Shukra lost an eye while trying to block Vishnu's dwarf form, Vamana, from completing a symbolic gift of land that would strip the asura king Mahabali of his kingdom, blinded by the very water meant to seal the promise. A planet cast as the keeper of both extravagant pleasure and the secret of overturning death itself, wounded in the act of trying to protect what his side valued, matches the tradition's reading of Venus's long dasha: two decades in which comfort, resourcefulness and a refusal to accept loss as final are all, in their own way, put fully to the test.
