The Earth Snake

general summary for a person born in an Earth Snake year of the Chinese calendar; outside astronomy

What the tradition reads

Like the Wood Pig, the Earth Snake belongs to a calendrical tradition, not an astronomical one: the Chinese zodiac runs on the lunisolar calendar rather than the ecliptic, and it is included in this corpus as its own labelled system for exactly that reason, kept apart from the sun sign or Ascendant it happens to sit beside in a birth summary. The twelve animals combine with the five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, each element lasting two consecutive years, to complete a sixty year cycle before an identical animal and element pairing returns. The Snake, sixth of the twelve animals, is described in Chinese symbology, in Wikipedia's own words, as intelligent, with a tendency to lack scruples, a reading that pairs real cleverness with a readiness to bend a rule to reach a result. Earth, the element of stability and of the centre rather than any one season, is read here as tempering that same intelligence into something more patient and reliable, cunning worked into a longer and steadier plan rather than into whichever shortcut serves it best.

The story

The Snake's place in the Great Race, the folk story that explains the animals' order, is won by cunning rather than speed: most tellings have the Snake hide, unseen, on the Horse's hoof for the length of the crossing, then leap out just before the finish to startle the Horse and slip into sixth place ahead of it, a story the tradition tells approvingly rather than as a mark against the Snake, since wit outmanoeuvring size is exactly the point being made. Earth, the element paired with this particular Snake year, comes from the Wu Xing, the five phase system used across Chinese thought for cycles of generation and control: Earth sits at the centre of the scheme rather than at any one compass point or season, associated with stability, centralisation and dampness, the transitional turn between one season and the next, generated by Fire's ash and, in the same cycle, giving rise to Metal. The Snake and the Pig stand opposite one another in the twelve year wheel, and Wikipedia's own page on the Snake states plainly that, of all twelve animals, the pig is the most incompatible with it, the one relationship in the wheel the tradition marks out as its hardest match.
