Venus square Uranus

Venus square Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Venus square Uranus is read, together with the opposition, as an on-again, off-again pattern in love: Cafe Astrology's natal reading names "a need for stimulation and need to break the rules regarding love and romance," feeling unloved with too much space yet smothered by too much closeness, so that "absence makes the heart grow fonder" describes the pattern best. The tradition notes difficulty with proper endings and a manner that can seem insensitive or aloof, naming unconventional arrangements as what works best, since the source finds here "a disdain for conventional, traditional, or otherwise 'normal' relationships." Between two charts, one person's Venus square another's Uranus carries the same "electric attraction" the conjunction brings, though at this friction making angle "both will have to deal with an inability to truly count on one another over time," affection arriving unpredictably and each partner liable to feel distant from the other at exactly the moments that matter most.

The story

A square sets two bodies at the quadrate distance from each other, three signs or ninety degrees apart; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the opposition, discordant, since the signs it joins are, in his words, of different natures and sexes. Aphrodite's parentage is a dispute the myth itself never resolves: Hesiod makes her Uranus's own daughter, born of the sea foam gathered around his severed remains, while Homer names her Zeus's daughter instead. At this friction making angle, the tradition reads that same disagreement as active tension rather than settled fact, two competing claims on one origin refusing to reconcile.
