Venus square Saturn
Venus square Saturn, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Venus square Saturn is read, together with the opposition, as one of the pairing's hard contacts: Cafe Astrology's natal reading says plainly that "giving and receiving love are not flowing and natural" for this placement, and that "blockages are experienced, and love relationships may be a source of frustration as a result, until the natives learn to love themselves." The tradition ties the square to social awkwardness in youth and an habitual expectation of rejection, a caution against love risked at all that sources say tends to soften only with self-acceptance. Between two charts, one person's Venus square another's Saturn is read as a contact in which "the Saturn person, fearing the Venus person's withdrawal of affection, loyalty, or respect, can easily become critical or demanding," a pattern that, left unchecked, can turn into a cycle of criticism met with withheld affection; the tradition's usual counsel is that both partners keep some interest or life outside the pairing.
The story
A square sets two bodies at the quadrate distance from each other, three signs or ninety degrees apart; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the opposition, discordant, since the signs it joins are, in his words, of different natures and sexes. Aphrodite's birth is bound up with the figure behind Saturn from the start: Wikipedia's account of Uranus records that Cronus "castrated his father, casting the severed testicles into the sea," and that Aphrodite arose from those same severed remains, though the page ties her existence to Uranus rather than to any family bond with Cronus himself. At this friction making angle, that shared and difficult origin is read as unresolved and unchosen, love and limitation working against each other's timing rather than sharing a single line of descent.
