Venus square Jupiter

Venus square Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Venus square Jupiter is read, like the opposition, as big-hearted and warm, open hearted people with a real tendency to want to give a lot; the difficulty the tradition names is that these natives sometimes overestimate their own capabilities, wanting to do and give more than is actually possible, moderation named as the important, and the most challenging, lesson of the placement. Between two charts, this square is read as Venus feeling romantically inspired by Jupiter, more sexually confident and attractive in Jupiter's presence, a wonderful feeling in itself; sources warn the contact also carries an enabling quality, the couple struggling with budgeting, instant gratification and excessive risk taking unless the tendency toward exaggeration and overindulgence is consciously managed.

The story

A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names; Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the square a hard aspect that creates a strong and usable tension requiring adjustment or a decision, and Ptolemy calls it, together with the opposition, discordant. Aphrodite and Zeus share a family connection in the Greek sources: some accounts make her his own daughter by Dione, others give her an older birth from the sea foam gathered after Uranus's fall.
