Venus opposite Uranus

Venus opposite Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Venus opposition Uranus is read, together with the square, as an on-again, off-again pattern in love: Cafe Astrology's natal reading names "a need for stimulation and need to break the rules regarding love and romance," a person who feels unloved with too much space yet smothered by too much closeness, so that, in the source's own words, "absence makes the heart grow fonder" describes the pattern best. The tradition notes real difficulty with proper endings, a manner that can read as insensitive or aloof, and names unconventional arrangements as what actually works, since the source finds in this placement "a disdain for conventional, traditional, or otherwise 'normal' relationships." Between two charts, one person's Venus opposition another's Uranus is read, together with the square, as carrying the same "electric attraction" as the conjunction, though "both will have to deal with an inability to truly count on one another over time," affection arriving unpredictably and each partner liable to feel distant from the other at exactly the moments that matter most.

The story

An opposition sets two bodies at the diametrical distance from each other, six signs or one hundred eighty degrees apart; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the square, discordant, since it joins signs of a differing nature and gender. Aphrodite's parentage is a dispute the myth itself never resolves: Hesiod makes her Uranus's own daughter, born of the sea foam gathered around his severed remains, while Homer names her Zeus's daughter instead. Set at the chart's widest distance rather than settled into one account, that same unresolved contradiction is what the tradition reads into the opposition, two claims on the same origin facing each other rather than agreeing.
