What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Venus opposition Saturn is read, together with the square, as one of the pairing's hard contacts: Cafe Astrology's natal reading says "giving and receiving love are not flowing and natural" here, and that "blockages are experienced, and love relationships may be a source of frustration as a result, until the natives learn to love themselves." The tradition names social awkwardness in youth and an expectation of rejection as common to this placement, a habit of undervaluing one's own worth in love that sources describe as improving only once it is recognized for what it is. Between two charts, one person's Venus opposition another's Saturn is read, together with the square, as a contact in which "the Saturn person, fearing the Venus person's withdrawal of affection, loyalty, or respect, can easily become critical or demanding," a cycle sources warn can turn destructive unless both partners keep some part of life outside the relationship for themselves.

The story

An opposition sets two bodies at the diametrical distance from each other, six signs or one hundred eighty degrees apart; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the square, discordant, since it joins signs of a differing nature and gender. Aphrodite's birth is bound up with the figure behind Saturn from the start: Wikipedia's account of Uranus records that Cronus "castrated his father, casting the severed testicles into the sea," and that Aphrodite arose from those same severed remains, though the page ties her existence to Uranus rather than to any family bond with Cronus himself. Set at the chart's widest distance rather than fused, that shared and difficult origin is read as held at arm's length, love and limitation facing each other from opposite ends of the same line rather than sharing it.
