Venus opposite Jupiter
Venus opposite Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Venus opposite Jupiter is read the same way as the square: big-hearted and warm, wanting to give a lot, sometimes overestimating what is actually possible to give. Facing each other directly, the opposition is read as placing the wish to give and the actual capacity to give at two genuinely different poles, moderation the lesson the tradition names for both angles alike. Between two charts, this opposition carries the same romantic inspiration and confidence the tradition names for the square, along with the same enabling quality: struggles with budgeting, instant gratification and risk taking that need conscious management, the opposition's own distance making the swing between confidence and excess more visible than in the square.
The story
An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle, the two bodies facing each other directly across it; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the square as discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes oppositions as prone to exaggeration, their dichotomous quality keeping whatever they touch in a real and often tense relation rather than letting it settle. Aphrodite and Zeus share a family connection in the Greek sources: some accounts make her his own daughter by Dione, others give her an older birth from the sea foam gathered after Uranus's fall.
