What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Venus conjunct Pluto is read as affection fused with an intensity that will not stay at the surface: Cafe Astrology's natal reading describes a "magnetic personality" that "tends to arouse strong feelings in others," a love nature that is "generally extreme" and hard to detach from once given. The tradition names possessiveness, even obsession, as this placement's common cost, and its own counsel is direct: "you will meet yourself through your relationships, and it will be critical that you recognize it as your own material" rather than something caused only by the other person. Between two charts, one person's Venus conjunct another's Pluto is read as "a strong pull between these two that can be fascinating, intensely attractive, and yet also disturbing at times," a connection sources describe as carrying a karmic weight and real sexual intensity, the Pluto person reading the Venus person's inner world with unusual depth even as possessiveness has room to take hold as the bond continues.

The story

A conjunction fuses two natures at one degree, ranked the strongest configuration the tradition keeps even outside the four configurations Ptolemy measures by distance. In the later tellings of Persephone's abduction that Ovid and Claudian shape, Wikipedia's page for Pluto records, it is specifically "the role of Venus and Cupid in manipulating Pluto with love and desire" that sets the story moving: Venus does not merely stand near the lord of the underworld in this account, she is the one who reaches into him and makes him want. Fused together in one chart, the tradition reads that same active reach as inseparable from Pluto's own intensity, wanting and possession no longer two different forces but one.
