Venus conjunct Jupiter

Venus conjunct Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Ptolemy counted both Venus and Jupiter among the benefics, and the tradition reads their conjunction as one of a chart's most straightforwardly fortunate contacts: Cafe Astrology describes a very grand idea of love and an unmistakable indulgent side, big hearted people who, given the choice, will generally take the high road rather than the narrow one. Between two charts, one person's Venus conjunct another's Jupiter is read as a strong, sometimes almost too strong, desire to have a good time together: sources describe genuine affection, warmth and pleasure-seeking, though the same generosity can lack discipline about giving what is wanted rather than what is actually needed.

The story

A conjunction sets two bodies at, or close to, the same degree, with no real angular distance between them; Ptolemy's own chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs measures the opposition, trine, square and sextile by the number of degrees separating two positions, yet Wikipedia's summary counts the conjunction among the five traditional major aspects sometimes called Ptolemaic, and reports that conjunctions are said to be the most powerful aspects, because they mutually intensify the effects of the involved planets. Aphrodite and Zeus share a family connection in the Greek sources: some accounts make her his own daughter by Dione, others give her an older birth from the sea foam gathered after Uranus's fall.
