Uranus square Pluto

Uranus square Pluto, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Uranus square Pluto's most recent exact hits fell between 2012 and 2015, astrologyking.com's page on the pair notes, with the series before that between 1932 and 1934, each run marking out its own stretch of birth years; natally, the source reads it as a life of dramatic change and upheaval, a longing for security and solid structures set against constant adjustment, met by working toward a stable, long-term career and by saving toward substantial material security. Cafe Astrology's transit reading for the square describes dissatisfaction with paths already taken or with how life has been lived so far, restrictions and humdrum routines becoming hard to tolerate, buried feelings and motives surfacing erratically; the source credits the resulting disruption with the power to break monotony and bad habits, while cautioning that a rebellious whim should be told apart from a genuine need for change. Between two charts, a square from one person's Uranus to another's Pluto sets the two planets a quarter of the circle apart, ninety degrees; the sources consulted for this entry give no separate reading for this specific synastry contact.

The story

A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the opposition, discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary places the square among the hard aspects, crediting it with a strong and usable tension, a turning point where an important decision is needed, often at some cost. Uranus and Hades never meet directly in the myths that survive: Uranus, the primordial sky, was overthrown by his own son Cronus generations before the Olympian order that produced Hades had even been founded, Gaia having armed Cronus with a sickle of adamant and urged him to the deed. Hades belongs to that later Olympian generation, one of the six children Cronus and Rhea bore according to Hesiod; when the world was divided three ways among Zeus, Poseidon and Hades, the underworld fell to Hades, who presides there over the ending every mortal life eventually reaches. Set at this harder angle, the sky's abrupt ending and the underworld's total one pull against each other, sudden overturning meeting a transformation that will not be hurried.
