Uranus square Neptune

Uranus square Neptune, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Uranus square Neptune is a significant planetary aspect shared by the generation born from 1952 to 1957, astrologyking.com's page on the pair notes, adding that the aspect next occurs from 2037 to 2043; natally, the source reads it as giving intelligence, charisma and romantic feeling alongside oversensitivity and a reactive, attention seeking streak, at times a distorted perception of self and world that brings strange ideas or sudden disappointment, with a religious or spiritual upbringing, or its rejection in favor of alternative belief, strongly shaping a person's later values. Within one chart, Cafe Astrology's transit reading for the square groups it with the opposition as a large prompt from circumstance to alter certain beliefs or attitudes, at times sparking an interest in metaphysics or psychic phenomena, with a heightened sensitivity to one's surroundings; the source cautions against a tendency to follow every whim or to dabble so broadly that little gets accomplished. Between two charts, a square from one person's Uranus to another's Neptune is read through the same friction the placement carries generally: the Uranus person's need to disrupt and update runs against the Neptune person's need to dissolve and idealize, each unsettling what the other would rather keep, so that even a stimulating exchange of belief and vision can leave both people feeling their footing was never quite solid.

The story

A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the opposition, discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary places the square among the hard aspects, crediting it with a strong and usable tension, a turning point where an important decision is needed, often at some cost. Uranus, the primordial sky, was born of Gaia to cover her on every side; together they produced the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hundred-Handers, but Uranus hated them and hid them away inside the earth. Angered, Gaia fashioned a sickle of adamant and urged her children to punish their father; only Cronus, the youngest Titan, agreed, and with the sickle Gaia had made, he castrated Uranus and ended his reign. Neptune's own page names him a brother of Jupiter and Pluto, the three presiding together over heaven, the earthly world and its underworld, and the seas, the sea itself falling to Neptune as his particular share. Set at this harder angle, the sky's ancient rupture and the sea's dissolving character work against each other, sudden overturning meeting a character that keeps dissolving any shape before it can fully hold.
