Uranus conjunct Uranus

the transiting Uranus's return to conjunct its own natal place at the end of its eighty four year cycle, or one person's Uranus conjunct another's in synastry

What the tradition reads

A natal chart cannot show Uranus conjunct itself, since a single body cannot stand at an angle from its own degree; the tradition instead reads this key through transit, at the far end of Uranus's own roughly eighty four year circuit around the Sun. Wikipedia's account of planetary returns calls the Uranus return one of the most important returns, alongside those of Jupiter and Saturn, noting that a person who is reasonably well and fit can feel a lively new interest in life at this point, and that many creative people have completed great works after this age; Cafe Astrology's own transit reading describes the return itself as a chance to feel as if beginning anew regarding the freedom to be oneself. Between two charts, a conjunction from one person's Uranus to another's is read through the same freedom-seeking, unconventional character the tradition gives Uranus generally, an immediate and instinctive alignment on questions of independence and reform; because Uranus moves so slowly, partners of a similar age already carry very close natal Uranus placements, so a synastry conjunction of this kind is, for most pairings, simply the ordinary case rather than a distinctive one.

The story

A conjunction fuses two natures at the same degree, sitting outside the four mutual configurations Ptolemy's chapter on the signs measures by fixed distance; Wikipedia's own summary calls conjunctions the most powerful aspects, since they mutually intensify the effects of the bodies involved, their character as easy or hard depending on which planets meet there. Uranus meeting Uranus has no myth of doubling to draw on, since Uranus does not face himself in the surviving stories; the tradition reads the pairing instead through Uranus's own single story of primordial rule and sudden overthrow. Gaia bore him to cover her on every side, and together they produced the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hundred-Handers, whom Uranus hated and hid away inside the earth; angered, Gaia armed Cronus, the only one of her children willing, with a sickle of adamant, and Cronus castrated Uranus and ended his reign in a single stroke. Uranus meeting its own natal place, at the far end of its own circuit, is read the same way that story reads Uranus's founding rupture: not a gradual arrival but a single stroke, a life beginning again exactly where it once began.
