The Sun trine Uranus

the Sun trine Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart the Sun trine Uranus is read as a unique blend of intuition, originality and spiritedness that requires no real effort to sustain: natives are described as accepting what makes them different without needing anyone's permission for it, natural free thinkers who nonetheless understand the value of compromise, detached and objective enough to notice trends before other people do. The tradition names an excellent adaptability across changing circumstances, a nonjudgmental manner that other people come to value, and an ease that lets these natives do their best work when simply given the freedom to operate without interference; because trines are read as easy and harmonious, the Uranian qualities of unconventionality and invention are said to arrive here without any need to force them. Between two charts, one person's Sun trine another's Uranus is read as working best when both partners actively encourage each other's independence: sources describe an electric, spontaneous quality to the bond, with Uranus supplying subtle surprises and fresh ideas that keep the connection from ever settling into suffocation, frequent small changes and discoveries feeding a shared sense of growth.

The story

A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, and sets the two against the square and opposition's discord. Uranus personifies the sky in the oldest Greek telling, consort to Gaia and father, by her, of the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires, imprisoned inside Gaia's own body until she gave their son Cronus an adamant sickle to castrate him with, the severed flesh cast into the sea and Aphrodite born from it; the deposed sky god himself fades from the story afterward, surfacing only to hand his descendants the occasional warning. Discovered in 1781 and named for this same fallen father, the planet meets the Sun here at its easiest angle, originality offered as a gift the self can simply accept rather than a claim it has to fight for.
