The Sun trine Saturn

the Sun trine Saturn, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart the Sun trine Saturn is read as the most harmonious version of this pairing, responsibility, discipline and caution arriving as inherent strengths rather than as lessons that had to be learned the hard way. The tradition describes natives who prefer not to waste their own resources, are bothered by sloppiness in themselves or others, and reach their goals through steady, measured progress rather than through rushed effort; trustworthiness and organization come to them naturally, requiring no conscious effort to access whenever the situation calls for either quality. Between two charts, one person's Sun trine another's Saturn is read as producing genuine loyalty: sources describe Saturn as very dedicated and responsible toward the Sun person, with a real desire to fulfill whatever the relationship asks of it, the two working well together on practical matters and business alike and supporting each other's commitments through difficult stretches without strain.

The story

A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, and sets the two against the square and opposition's discord. Two different stories carry the name. Greek myth has Cronus overthrow his own father Uranus and devour his own children by Rhea to escape a prophecy that one of them would depose him, until his son Jupiter, Zeus in that telling, did just that. Rome's Saturn kept the name but not the violence: arriving in Italy dethroned and a fugitive, he was received by Janus, brought agriculture and civilization, and was rewarded with a share of the kingdom for it, ruling afterward over a golden age of peace, the generous, ordering side of the figure given room here to work without the devouring side of the Greek story crowding it out. A Sun trine to Saturn draws on exactly that ordering gift freely, structure offered as something the self can simply build on rather than something it first has to survive.
