The Sun trine Neptune

the Sun trine Neptune, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart the Sun trine Neptune is read as the strongest easy contact the two bodies can make, carrying the sextile's compassion, artistic talent and spiritual sensitivity further still and with less effort. Natives are described as naturally compassionate, well suited to work as artists, musicians or writers, and inclined to build supportive rather than dominating environments around themselves; the tradition's one caution is that these natives tend to presume other people share their own spiritual sensibilities, a naivety they eventually learn to see for what it is without losing the underlying gift. Between two charts, one person's Sun trine another's Neptune is read among the pairing's more positive, stimulating contacts: sources describe a real level of forgiveness and mercy in the chemistry between the two people, freedom to share dreams together, and a tolerance the tradition calls soothing and settling, the same quality it credits to the sextile but arriving here with less friction to overcome first.

The story

A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, a judgment about the angle rather than about the particular bodies standing in it. Neptune's myth, given to a planet the ancients never saw, is Poseidon's sea, ruled as one of three brothers who divided the cosmos into sky, water and underworld, a domain that gives generously even as it can just as easily turn to storm. Set at an effortless angle to the Sun rather than fused with it, the sea god's planet offers its abundance without demanding the self surrender any of its own shape in return, the calm crossing every sailor hopes for rather than the storm every sailor fears.
