The Sun trine Jupiter
the Sun trine Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Sun trine Jupiter is read as the sextile's ease made stronger still: Ptolemy names the trine harmonious, and Jupiter's own benefic nature only deepens the flow, since nothing in the contact asks to be worked for. The tradition describes people who are well received, helpful and well informed, carrying strong personal morals and enough natural faith in others that positive circumstances seem to arrive on their own, an enjoyment of travel and a charitable disposition counted among the aspect's most reliable signatures; the only caution repeated alongside the praise is that ease this complete can dull the very effort that would otherwise sharpen it. Between two charts, one person's Sun trine another's Jupiter is read as the Jupiter person opening doors the Sun person had not thought to try, building confidence and encouraging bigger ambitions than either might reach for alone. Sources describe partners who genuinely enjoy envisioning large possibilities together, with the same recurring caution that a shared taste for indulgence, given no resistance at all, can be taken further than either partner actually intended.
The story
A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, and sets the two against the square and opposition's discord. Jupiter's myth supplies the abundance this ease draws on. Jupiter succeeded his father Saturn as king of the gods; unlike the Greek story of Cronus and Zeus, the Romans did not regard this succession as violent or hostile, and Saturn kept his own temple and cult afterward. Jupiter ruled the sky as "Optimus Maximus," the best and greatest, an office built from titles of victory and protection as readily as from agricultural ones, a guardian of plenty as much as of order. He then shared the cosmos with two brothers, Neptune given the waters and Pluto the underworld, and kept for himself the widest and brightest of the three realms. A Sun trine to a planet already ruling that much of the visible world is simply let into its favor without having to ask.
