The Sun sextile Uranus
the Sun sextile Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Sun sextile Uranus is read as originality and progress that come without much trying: the tradition describes natives who stick up for the underdog naturally, hold honesty in high regard, and connect easily with people from every walk of life, egalitarian and nonjudgmental without having worked to become so. They are credited with an intuitive access to the unconventional, a flexibility that serves them across many areas of life, and, notably, a tendency to find favor with people already in positions of authority; positive change is said to arrive suddenly and from unexpected sources, which asks of these natives mainly that they stay alert enough to notice it. Between two charts, one person's Sun sextile another's Uranus is read as working best when both partners actively encourage each other's independence: sources describe an electric, spontaneous quality to the connection, Uranus supplying subtle surprises and fresh ideas that keep the relationship from ever settling into suffocation, with frequent small changes and discoveries feeding a sense of mutual growth and forward momentum.
The story
A sextile is sixty degrees, a sixth of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the trine, harmonious, since the two signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, a judgment about the angle itself. Uranus personifies the sky in the oldest Greek telling, consort to Gaia and father, by her, of the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires, whom he imprisoned inside Gaia's own body until she fashioned an adamant sickle and had their son Cronus castrate him, casting the severed flesh into the sea, from which Aphrodite was born; Uranus himself fades from the story after, surfacing only to give his descendants the occasional prophetic warning. Discovered in 1781 and named for this same fallen sky father, the planet, offered here only a cooperative angle to the Sun rather than a fusion with it, lends the identity a workable share of that same originality without asking the self to be overthrown for it.
