The Sun opposite Mercury
the Sun opposite Mercury between two charts in synastry (the two cannot stand at this angle within a single nativity)
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Sun and Mercury cannot stand a hundred and eighty degrees apart: Ptolemy states that Mercury never reaches a greater distance from the Sun than the space of one sign, and modern delineators confirm that a conjunction is the only major aspect the two can make in one nativity, an opposition's full diameter of the circle being entirely beyond Mercury's own reach from its Sun. A mind facing identity directly across the whole wheel is, for that reason, never a single chart's own configuration; the tradition reads it only as a contact between two people's separate charts. Between two charts, one person's Sun opposite another's Mercury is read as producing lively exchanges of ideas: sources describe the pair understanding each other well even while holding genuinely different opinions, the tension of the full axis kept from turning bitter by an underlying comprehension the tradition treats as unusually resilient for an aspect this direct.
The story
An opposition sets two bodies a hundred and eighty degrees apart, the full diameter of the circle, the greatest distance either can stand from the other; Ptolemy counts it, together with the square, discordant, set against the trine and sextile's harmony, a judgment about the angle itself. Mercury's myth still carries its own terms across the widest angle. As an infant Mercury was already credited with inventing the lyre from a tortoise shell; separately, Apollo, the god most closely tied to the sun's own light, awarded him a magic wand that later became the caduceus, the staff of two entwined snakes, and Mercury went on to serve as Jupiter's messenger, carrying words across distances neither god could otherwise close. A mind set squarely opposite another's identity is still, in the oldest telling, only Mercury doing his appointed work, closing a gap by speech that nothing else in the chart is positioned to close.
