The Sun opposite Jupiter
the Sun opposite Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Sun opposite Jupiter carries much of the square's excess but faced across the whole wheel rather than at a right angle: Ptolemy names the opposition discordant, yet Jupiter's own classification among the benefics still tempers it, since even this configuration is read as too much good will rather than as harm. The tradition describes people whose good intentions run ahead of realistic follow through, who overdo commitments, accumulate debt through confidence rather than carelessness, and struggle with a self control that promises more than it can consistently deliver, while still tending to draw help from others who read the underlying warmth correctly. Between two charts, one person's Sun opposite another's Jupiter is read as the same desire to please that marks the square, expressed instead across the relationship's whole axis: sources describe partners eager to make each other happy in ways that repeatedly outrun practical sense, the Jupiter person's natural expansiveness capable of lifting the Sun person's spirits considerably, provided both sides keep at least one eye on what the excess is actually costing.
The story
An opposition sets two bodies a hundred and eighty degrees apart, the full diameter of the circle and the greatest distance either can stand from the other; Ptolemy counts it, together with the square, among the discordant relations, in contrast to the trine and sextile's harmony. Jupiter's myth explains why the strain here still runs generous. Jupiter succeeded his father Saturn as king of the gods; unlike the Greek story of Cronus and Zeus, the Romans did not regard the succession as violent or hostile, and Saturn kept his own temple and cult afterward. Jupiter ruled the sky as Rome's "Optimus Maximus," the best and greatest, cultivating titles of victory and protection alongside openly agricultural ones, a guardian of abundance as much as of the state; he then divided the cosmos with two brothers, Neptune taking the waters and Pluto the underworld, keeping the widest and brightest realm for himself. Faced directly across the wheel by a planet that large, the Sun is not diminished so much as asked to hold its own scale against a will that has never learned to think small.
