The Sun conjunct Uranus
the Sun conjunct Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Sun conjunct Uranus is read as identity fused with the planet of sudden change: it comes naturally to these natives to question tradition and, at times, to rebel against whatever is already established, not from a wish to break rules for their own sake but because rules without a logical reason behind them do not hold their respect. The tradition describes people who resist routine, need real autonomy in how they work, and come across as refreshingly honest, independent and intuitive, if also somewhat erratic; a marked nervous tension, including insomnia and anxiety, is named as a common cost, one the delineators say needs a healthy outlet rather than suppression, and these natives are drawn toward metaphysical, scientific or otherwise unconventional paths rather than traditional careers. Between two charts, one person's Sun conjunct another's Uranus is read as a relationship that sidesteps tradition and brings real inspiration along with real uncertainty: the two often meet while each is already looking for an alternative way of relating, and while the Sun person may end up craving more commitment than the Uranus person is willing to give, the contact is credited with challenging the Sun person toward greater freedom even as it inspires the Uranus person's own individuality.
The story
A conjunction sets two bodies at, or close to, the same degree, with no real angular distance between them; Ptolemy's own chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs measures the opposition, trine, square and sextile by the number of degrees separating two positions, yet Wikipedia's summary counts the conjunction among the five traditional major aspects sometimes called Ptolemaic, and reports that conjunctions are said to be the most powerful aspects. Uranus personifies the sky itself in the oldest Greek telling, consort to Gaia and father, by her, of the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires; he imprisoned these children inside Gaia's own body, and it was Gaia who fashioned an adamant sickle and persuaded their son Cronus to strike back, castrating his father and casting the severed flesh into the sea, from which Aphrodite was born. Discovered only in 1781, the planet was named for this same fallen sky father in the following century, precisely because Cronus, Saturn's own Greek name, was known to be his son. A Sun fused with Uranus meets, in one degree, an origin point that did not survive its own overthrow unchanged.
