The Sun conjunct Mercury
the Sun conjunct Mercury, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Sun conjunct Mercury is, astronomically, close to unavoidable: Ptolemy notes that Mercury never reaches a greater distance from the Sun than the space of one sign, so the conjunction is, in practice, the ordinary state of the two bodies rather than a special occurrence. The tradition reads the pair standing together as the identity and the mind sharing one register: people with this placement carry considerable mental energy, invest real pride in their intellectual capacities, and speak with the ego and the mind aligned, applying a kind of logic and definition to their own will. The same closeness has a cost the delineators name directly: these natives can be better at speaking than at passive listening, too occupied thinking of what to say next, and quick to feel unheard if their opinions are dismissed. Between two charts, one person's Sun conjunct another's Mercury is read as a relationship where talking and sharing ideas is highlighted from early on, the two people enjoying learning new things together and trading points of view as one of the partnership's real pleasures.
The story
A conjunction sets two bodies at, or close to, the same degree, with no real angular distance between them; Ptolemy's own chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs measures the opposition, trine, square and sextile by the number of degrees separating two positions, yet Wikipedia's summary counts the conjunction among the five traditional major aspects sometimes called Ptolemaic, and reports that conjunctions are said to be the most powerful aspects, because they mutually intensify the effects of the involved planets. The myth gives this particular closeness its own reason. As an infant Mercury was already credited with inventing the lyre from a tortoise shell; separately, Apollo, the god most closely tied to the sun's own light, awarded Mercury a magic wand that later became the caduceus, the staff of two entwined snakes that stayed his lasting emblem. Mercury went on to serve as Jupiter's own herald, carrying messages across the whole cosmos; a Sun fused with the planet built for exactly that errand finds its own will given a voice that rarely stops explaining itself.
