Saturn trine Uranus

Saturn trine Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Saturn trine Uranus is read, like the sextile, as an easy sense of "the right balance between the traditional and the modern," the tradition naming a good teacher, guide or mediator with real skill in science and mathematics, determination paired with the good sense to know when to let an effort go, and long lasting friendships built over time. Sources note that this aspect too "is shared by many born within the same year or two, and thus is less personal than other aspects," its effects growing more noticeable only where it also touches the Sun, Moon or an angle of the chart. Between two charts, one person's Saturn trine another's Uranus is read as an excellent combination for business, since "one helps the other bring form or structure to their ideas" without the friction the square produces at a harder angle. Sources call the contact one indication of a long standing union, its ease showing up as stability rather than excitement.

The story

A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names and one of the two he calls harmonious. Uranus is Saturn's own father. Gaia, angered by his cruelty toward their children, fashioned a sickle and persuaded Cronus, the youngest of the Titans and the one the Romans would later conflate with their own Saturn, to use it; it was Cronus who then castrated Uranus and cast the remains into the sea. At this most flowing angle, father and son read as reconciled across the whole distance the myth once put between them, the old overthrow settled enough by now that it underwrites cooperation rather than repeating itself.
