Saturn trine Pluto

Saturn trine Pluto, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Saturn trine Pluto natal is read as making a person strong minded, motivated and loyal, appearing self controlled, confident and steady while a more complex and insecure nature is said to lie within; sources credit the placement with the patience, willpower, research and determination that lead to self mastery, together with a talent for seeing the big picture, for leadership and organisation, and for carrying reforms through to practical results that earn respect and advancement. Hardships, setbacks and resistance are said not to stop a person carrying this placement from reaching their goals, since they tend to thrive under pressure and competition and to hold real persuasive influence over others, with the caution that Saturn and Pluto are considered the most serious of the planets, so that this ease can still tip into an obsession with darker themes unless the placement's power is turned toward the psychological growth it also makes possible. Between two charts, one person's Saturn trine another's Pluto joins structure and transformation at the easiest possible angle, a hundred and twenty degrees apart. None of the sources consulted for this entry gives a separate reading for this specific contact in synastry, so none is offered here.

The story

A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine. Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the trine extremely beneficial, indicating harmony, ease and what is natural. Saturn and Pluto are father and son. Cronus, the Titan the Saturn page says the Romans conflated with their own Saturn, fell from power, and the cosmos was divided in three among his sons: Zeus took the sky, Poseidon took the sea, and Pluto took the underworld, on the telling Pluto's own page gives; that page also notes Pluto was often linked to Ploutos, the god of wealth, since mineral riches were found underground. Set at this easier angle, the father's old authority and the son's inherited depth are read as accepting each other's claim without contest, structure lending its favour to whatever wealth the underworld already keeps in trust.
