Saturn square Uranus

Saturn square Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Saturn square Uranus is read as tension between "wanting to break free and needing to follow the rules," the tradition naming extremes of feeling that escalate quickly, frequent indecision, rebellious impulses and a general irritability that comes and goes. Sources note a real fascination with how things work, methods and inventions, mathematical ability, and a resilience that the placement earns through practice, the native's core struggle being how to weigh the wish for change against the responsibilities and expectations already resting on them. Between two charts, one person's Saturn square another's Uranus is read as friction between wanting things to change and wanting them to stay as they are: the Saturn person "would prefer to stick with what's worked in the past," while the Uranus person reads that preference as "limiting their growth or holding them back," and Saturn in turn feels unsettled by Uranus's "seemingly random or rebellious actions." Sources counsel that both partners avoid challenging one another directly and look instead for a middle ground.

The story

A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names, and one of the two he calls discordant. Uranus is Saturn's own father. Gaia, angered by his cruelty toward their children, fashioned a sickle and persuaded Cronus, the youngest of the Titans and the one the Romans would later conflate with their own Saturn, to use it; it was Cronus who then castrated Uranus and cast the remains into the sea. Set at this harder angle, that old act of overthrow repeats itself in miniature, Saturn's need for order running headlong into the same restless, unseating force he once had to wield against his own father.
