Saturn square Saturn
the transiting Saturn's periodic pass in square to its own natal place, or one person's Saturn square another's in synastry
What the tradition reads
A natal chart cannot show Saturn square itself, since no body can stand at an angle from its own degree; the tradition reads this key through transit, at the points roughly every seven years where Saturn's transiting place squares its own natal one. Sources describe the pass as making the less fulfilling parts of a person's life more pronounced and harder to bear, with people and situations seeming rigid, obstinate and unyielding; it is read as a period for confronting whatever is overly constrictive and reassessing one's plans rather than for taking reckless risks, since the underlying goals of maturity and security are said to come into sharper focus. Between two charts, one person's Saturn square another's sets two structures at odds, ninety degrees apart, a hard angle by Ptolemy's own reckoning. None of the sources consulted for this entry gives a separate reading for this specific contact in synastry, so none is offered here.
The story
A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the opposition, discordant, since the signs it joins are not of the same kind, but of different natures and sexes. Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the square a hard aspect that creates a strong and usable tension, one that may integrate two different areas of a person's life or mark a turning point where an important decision carries a cost. Saturn meeting Saturn has no myth of doubling to draw on, since the god does not typically face himself in the old stories; the tradition instead returns to the moment his reign was actually broken. The Saturn page records a tradition that he was usurped by his own son Jupiter and expelled from Greece, becoming afterward an immigrant god, received only later in Italy by Janus. Set at this harder angle, two charts' Saturns are read through that same fracture: not a ruler meeting his own reflection at ease, but the old authority meeting a version of itself that has already unseated one holder of the position, each side certain that its own claim on structure and duty is the one that should stand.
