Saturn square Pluto
Saturn square Pluto, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Saturn square Pluto natal is read as a placement that breeds real stubbornness alongside a remarkable resilience and a ruthless determination to succeed, sources drawing a careful line between stubbornness, a refusal to change one's stance regardless of whether it is right or wrong, and persistence, continuing in a course despite difficulty or opposition; the same placement is said to strain a person's ethics and capacity to change through conservative views and an unwillingness that can verge on ignorance, and to hurt close relationships when a partner's or family's advice to change goes unheeded out of pride. Handled well, the same ruthless determination is credited with triumphing over real adversity and reaching the top of one's field, the sources naming flexibility and a willingness to let go of the fear of change as what turns the placement's hard edge toward genuine fulfilment. Between two charts, one person's Saturn square another's Pluto sets one chart's demand for structure against the other's pull toward transformation, ninety degrees apart, a hard angle by Ptolemy's own reckoning. None of the sources consulted for this entry gives a separate reading for this specific contact in synastry, so none is offered here.
The story
A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the opposition, discordant, since the signs it joins are not of the same kind, but of different natures and sexes. Saturn and Pluto are father and son. Cronus, the Titan the Saturn page says the Romans conflated with their own Saturn, fell from power, and the cosmos was divided in three among his sons: Zeus took the sky, Poseidon took the sea, and Pluto took the underworld, on the telling Pluto's own page gives. Set at this harder angle, the father who once held all three realms at once meets, in one of his own sons, a portion of that old wholeness now permanently divided off and defended as its own domain, the tension of the square read as the strain of a division that was final but never entirely comfortable.
