Saturn opposite Saturn
the transiting Saturn's periodic pass in opposition to its own natal place, or one person's Saturn opposite another's in synastry
What the tradition reads
A natal chart cannot show Saturn opposite itself, since no body can stand at an angle from its own degree; the tradition reads this key through transit, at the point roughly midway through Saturn's cycle where its transiting place opposes its own natal one. Sources describe the pass as a turning point regarding a person's direction and achievements, a period when responsibilities and debts come due and other people or circumstances can seem to stand in the way of what was planned; it is read as a call to pare down and build self discipline, facing the resulting conflict with maturity and patience rather than avoiding it. Between two charts, one person's Saturn opposite another's sets two structures at the furthest possible remove, a hundred and eighty degrees apart. None of the sources consulted for this entry gives a separate reading for this specific contact in synastry, so none is offered here.
The story
An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the square, discordant, since the signs it joins are not of the same kind, but of different natures and sexes. Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes the opposition as fundamentally relational, prone to exaggeration because of its dichotomous quality, with the issues it raises often tense. Saturn meeting Saturn has no myth of doubling to draw on, since the god does not typically face himself in the old stories; the tradition instead returns to the standoff left behind by his own succession. Once usurped by his son Jupiter and driven out of Greece, the Saturn page records, he lived on as an immigrant god, arriving in Italy "dethroned and fugitive" while the throne he had held remained, across the whole distance between the two of them, in his son's hands. Set at this furthest angle, two charts' Saturns are read the same way: the same authority recognised in full on both sides, but held from opposite ends, each side sure of its own claim to the ground the other now occupies.
