Saturn opposite Neptune
Saturn opposite Neptune, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Alan Leo's delineation does not distinguish the opposition from the square, grouping both under the same adverse reading: an uncommon and strange position, in his words, carrying a lofty vibration present day humanity cannot fully answer, together with some hidden "kink" in the nature that may never come to fruition but remain entirely unsuspected. He counsels guarding against the subtler forms of selfishness this position can bring out, adds separately that the cultivation of psychic faculties would not suit it, and notes, as a further and distinct point, that some melancholy tendency is always associated with the position. Astrology King's reading of the same opposition, a contact it says recurs roughly every thirty six years and so is shared by people born within a few years of each other, names confusion in a person's relationships and in how they perceive the world, duties and responsibilities that weigh on them amid self doubt and pessimism, and fears or suspicions projected onto others; the same source names self reliance and self discipline, once trust is learned, as what the position eventually gives back. Between two charts, one person's Saturn opposite another's Neptune places the two planets at this furthest angle across the two charts; the sources consulted for this entry give no separate reading for the synastry contact itself.
The story
An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the square, discordant, since the signs it joins are not of the same kind, but of different natures and sexes. Saturn and Neptune are father and son: the Neptune page names Saturn and Ops as his parents, and names him a brother of Jupiter and Pluto, with whom he presides over the three realms of heaven, the earthly world (including the underworld), and the seas. Set at the furthest angle apart, the father who is named as the author of that family and the son who is named as ruling one of its three shares of the world stand across the sky from each other, each in undisputed possession of ground the other does not enter.
