Saturn conjunct Uranus

Saturn conjunct Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart, Alan Leo reads Saturn conjunct Uranus as no particularly important conjunction by itself, yet one that, as it comes into active operation over the life, "will act very powerfully" if other strong factors are already at work. In general, he writes, it inclines the mind "to investigate the occult and mystical side of things," turning attention toward astrology and science and bringing a real change in the native's attitude toward whatever conventional ideas they once held, provided the change is not asked to happen too suddenly. Between two charts, one person's Saturn conjunct another's Uranus is read as the Saturn person taking on the task of moderating the Uranus person's unconventional or progressive side. Sources describe the Saturn person's own traditional nature as the very thing that triggers the Uranus partner's need for change and rebellion, a dynamic that can settle into a real balance once both people learn to handle it well.

The story

A conjunction fuses two natures at one degree, the strongest configuration by the tradition's own reckoning even though it falls outside the four configurations Ptolemy measures by distance. Uranus is Saturn's own father. Gaia, angered by his cruelty toward their children, fashioned a sickle and persuaded Cronus, the youngest of the Titans and the one the Romans would later conflate with their own Saturn, to use it; it was Cronus who then castrated Uranus and cast the remains into the sea. Fused together at one degree, father and son stand as a single, doubled memory of that first overthrow, the sky that was unseated and the son who unseated it inseparable from one another.
