Neptune conjunct Pluto
Neptune conjunct Pluto, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Neptune and Pluto are, in Wikipedia's own phrase, among the "slower moving planets," whose transits it calls more powerful and noticeable than those of the inner planets. Within one chart, Cafe Astrology's transit reading describes the conjunction itself as a powerful period of changing beliefs and soul-searching, one shared by people born in the same and neighboring years, with a person's spirituality and compassionate nature going through a renewal the source frames directly as a kind of rebirth. Between two charts, a conjunction from one person's Neptune to another's Pluto places the two planets at the same degree across the two charts; because the two planets move so slowly, similarly aged partners often already carry a comparable placement natally, within their own separate charts, and the sources consulted for this entry give no separate reading for the synastry contact itself.
The story
A conjunction fuses two natures at the same degree, sitting outside the four mutual configurations Ptolemy's chapter on the signs measures by fixed distance; Wikipedia's own summary calls conjunctions the most powerful aspects, since they mutually intensify the effects of the bodies involved, their character as easy or hard depending on which planets meet there. Poseidon and Hades are brothers, two of the six children Cronus and Rhea bore according to the Hesiod genealogy the Pluto myth page relates; when the world was divided three ways, the sea fell to Poseidon and the underworld to Hades, so the brothers rule adjoining domains beneath the sky their brother Zeus rules from above. The same page notes that the underworld god was also worshipped as Plouton, a name tied to the Greeks' own sense that mineral wealth found underground belonged to the same chthonic power that governed the earth's dead. Fused together, the sea's fluid depths and the underworld's buried depths are read as a single, undivided element, one brother's domain running into the other's without any seam between them.
