The Moon trine Uranus

the Moon trine Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart the Moon trine Uranus is read, like the sextile, as a preference for an open and accepting manner, encouraging others to be themselves. The tradition treats the trine as the more dynamic of the two harmonious Uranus contacts, this same openness expressed consistently and naturally rather than called upon only when it happens to be useful, an ease with unpredictability that needs no particular occasion to show itself. Between two charts, one person's Moon trine another's Uranus is read among the pairing's gentlest contacts: the relationship's unusual quality is least likely to feel disruptive here, and the couple's shared mischief, sense of humor, and occasional wish to shake things up read as the pairing's most natural and least effortful expression of what every Moon-Uranus contact offers.

The story

A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the trine extremely beneficial, indicating harmony, ease and what is natural, one of the two aspects the tradition sets against the square and opposition's discord. Uranus carries into this pairing the oldest sky god the Greeks named, Ouranos: born of Gaia and then her mate, he fathered the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hundred Handed Ones, then hid each of them away inside their own mother out of dislike for what he had made, until Cronus, the one child willing to act, castrated him at Gaia's own urging and ended his reign outright; Uranus himself barely appears in the myths that follow. Set at this most flowing angle, the Moon's own returning rhythm and Uranus's myth of rupture stop fighting each other entirely, change arriving as naturally as a phase of the Moon itself, welcomed rather than resisted.
