The Moon trine Saturn

the Moon trine Saturn, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart the Moon trine Saturn is read, like the sextile, as a temperament that keeps its cool during stress or emotional upheaval quite naturally, employing common sense exactly where others might express fear or impatience. The tradition treats the trine as the more dynamic of the two harmonious Moon-Saturn contacts, discipline arriving as a steady, unforced undertone to the whole personality rather than a resource the sextile's native has to actively call upon. Between two charts, one person's Moon trine another's Saturn is read among the soft aspects the tradition trusts most for staying power: the flow between the two is manageable, the Saturn person visibly supportive, and sources note that longevity is more likely with the trine or sextile specifically, frustrations less apparent and clashes less frequent than in any harder Moon-Saturn contact.

The story

A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the trine extremely beneficial, indicating harmony, ease and what is natural, one of the two aspects the tradition sets against the square and opposition's discord. Two different stories carry the name. In Greek myth, Cronus overthrew his own father Uranus, then devoured his own children by Rhea to escape a prophecy that one of them would depose him in turn, until his son Jupiter, Zeus in that telling, did exactly that. Rome kept the name but not the violence: its own Saturn arrived in Italy already dethroned and a fugitive, was received by Janus, brought agriculture and civilization, and was rewarded with a share of the kingdom rather than winning it back by force, ruling afterward, in Virgil's own account, over a golden age of peace. Set at this most flowing angle, only Rome's own telling is heard: Saturn's golden age was, on this account, exactly what a well kept structure allows to flourish, and the tradition reads the trine as Selene's own light growing steadier, not smaller, for having that same careful stewardship nearby.
